DRS Technologies to Produce Handheld Precision Targeting System for Forward Observers

DRS TECHNOLOGIES TO PRODUCE HANDHELD PRECISION TARGETING SYSTEM FOR FORWARD OBSERVERS

ARLINGTON, VA, December 13, 2016 - DRS Technologies, a Leonardo company, announced today that it has received a five-year Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity contract from the U.S. Army to produce a next-generation hand-held precision laser targeting system, enabling forward observers to call for precision-guided munitions onto targets.  The firm-fixed-price contract is worth up to $339.3 million.

The Joint Effects Targeting System (JETS) is designed for users to engage targets with precision munitions and provide digital connectivity to requesting call-for-fire. JETS improves upon and adds enhanced technologies for the U.S. military, significantly reducing weight and improving precision accuracy making the system a battlefield multiplier.

“JETS will give forward observers the capability to call in precision munitions in all scenarios, leading to less munitions expended, higher target success rates and ultimately greater protection for our warfighters on the ground,” said Shawn Black, vice president and general manager of  the DRS Electro-Optical and Infrared Systems line of business. “DRS brought to bear its extensive experience in EO/IR development for this program and we are proud to be selected to produce such an advanced system,” Black said.

The device will allow forward observers to employ precision targeting munitions such as the Joint Direct Attack Munition, Excalibur and laser-guided bombs.

The device, to be built by the Infrared Sensors and Systems business unit of DRS, will have day and thermal night-vision sights, celestial compass sensors, an eye-safe laser range-finder and a digital magnetic compass among several other features. The weight of the handheld module of JETS will be less than 5.5 pounds.
